Summer is a good time to eat bitter melon. We are very lucky to have a vegetable garden in our backyard. My favorite way to cook bitter melon is to stir fry with black bean and garlic, a simple and flavorful dish. Kids normal don’t like the bitter taste. It takes a while to get used to the taste. Other than that, it is a healthy dish. It is our summer staple.

A simple and tasty vegetarian dish from our vegetable garden. The cooking is straight forward, not much to worry about. This Sichuan style bean sauce is fairly new to me, but Lynard and I love the interesting taste. You can use it on stir fries, fish or other famous Sichuan style cuisines. I will try it on Chinese eggplant next time. This savory and spicy Chinese eggplant dish is made with ground pork (魚香茄子) and is great to serve on rice. Our vegetable garden is coming to the end due to the bad weather. I know it is only August. But the plants only produce a few fruits here and there. I am making my favorite bitter melon dish using tasty black bean sauce, my favorite Cantonese dish. This time I made the dish a little on the dry side because I want the sauce caramelized in the pan a little bit longer to create more flavor. Char Siu Chicken with Chinese Bitter Melon

Originally I made this chicken dish with leftover char siu sauce from the refrigerator. I did not plan ahead or marinate the chicken like we normally do when making char siu pork. I quickly pan fried the chicken thighs until lightly brown, about 80% done. I spooned the char siu sauce on both sides, continued to pan fry until both sides get caramelized and chicken nicely glazed and turned dark brown. OMG, was it good or what?
